About Kadabra

The inventor, the broader vision and how Kadabra came to life

The Inventor

Kadabra was invented, developed and produced in full by Tal Ben Ari (aka Tribal Tul), a former Music producer, DJ/Live performer in over 500 shows world-wide, a technology freak and mostly a programmer from a very young age (very young)!

The “very young” part is not just a joke.

Around 1981, when Tul was about two years old, he was already sitting on his mother’s lap, pressing the Enter key and watching code appear on the screen. He was exposed to programming the same way a carpenter’s son is exposed to wood – naturally, constantly, and before anyone even thinks to call it “learning.”

School, on the other hand, was never really his natural habitat. He was a bad student, a real street punk (green mohawk) not exactly the kind of kid who enjoyed sitting quietly in class. But computers were different. By the age of 14, Tul passed the final school exam in programming, and heard Psytrance Music for the first time.

The music side started just as early.

Around the age of 9 or 10, Tul became completely captured by the power of music. He started experimenting with loops and synthesis on his older brother’s Casio MIDI synth, and a few years later connected that synth by MIDI to his shiny new XT computer, running Impulse Tracker and other DOS music programs.

That fire for making music never burned out. It only grew.

By the age of 20, Tul had turned his music into a complicated live act and started performing on stages around the world. Over the next 15 years, he played in more than 35 countries, from small dancefloors with 50 people to huge stages with more than 15,000 people dancing.

Later came the studio years.

After finishing sound school and teaching synthesis, Tul started producing more seriously. He released five full-length CD albums, as Tribal Tul and as 1NTT with Stephan Holvec from Total Eclipse, along with tracks on different compilations.

But the deeper he got into music technology, the more obvious the problem became: the equipment was never really enough.

The live shows became too hard to build, too heavy to carry, too long to set up, and still too limited in expression. No matter how much gear he tried, Tul couldn’t find a tool that really felt worthy – something powerful, playable, immediate, and alive.

That missing tool slowly became the reason Kadabra had to exist.

Tribal-Tools

Tribal-Tools is the creative and technological framework behind Kadabra, bringing together instrument design, software development, performance thinking, and new approaches to musical expressions

How Kadabra was conceived

Making the actual first Kadabra came while Tul was working with his innovation partner Ori Ben-Shabat in the hi-tech dance company Maria-Kong, starting 2009 developing there till 2018…

Maria-Kong created extremely unique performances using the most advance technologies the couple could wield in that period, every day was a new struggle, exploring new technologies to blow peoples mind. while most innovations required dancers to be equipped with ergonomic electronics, the company (Maria-Kong) never wanted to reveal why the dancers look so much in tune and in rhythm with the music, it was just Magic! never used as a marketing gimmick to draw peoples attention, Maria-Kong needed more and more sensors and tech in its worldwide shows becoming a cutting edge phenomenon in its genre, so Tul created an OS to receive new technologies and use them in a stable and robust way. and that is still the base of Kadabra-OS, the program that communicates and translates Kadabra to a musical tool.
